Feature — Split Transactions

One trip. Two purposes.
Tell the truth about both.

A supply run that had both business supplies and personal items. A dinner that was part client, part personal. A subscription that covers business and home. The split transaction tool lets you divide any charge between two or more portions — each with its own category, its own label, and its own place in your books.

Split into as many portions as needed Must balance to the original total Both sides update in your reports automatically

In this walkthrough you are seeing the split transaction tool being used on two real scenarios: a supply run that included both business supplies and personal items, and a subscription that covers both the business and home. Watch how the split tool enforces that the portions have to add up to the original total before you can apply — that balance requirement is what protects your books from math errors and missing amounts.

How it works

Split the charge. Both sides accurate.

1
Flag the transaction for splittingIn the categorize view, select the transaction and choose Split. The split tool opens inline so you do not have to leave your workflow or navigate to a separate screen.
2
Enter the amounts for each portionDivide the total between two or more portions. The tool displays a running balance and requires all portions to add up to the original charge total before you can apply — preventing rounding errors and incomplete splits.
3
Assign a category and label to each portionEach portion gets its own category (supplies, meals, subscriptions, etc.), its own label (business or personal), and optionally its own memo. Both portions are fully independent entries in your books.
4
Apply and both sides updateThe business-side reports include the business portion at the correct amount. The personal-side reports include the personal portion at the correct amount. Neither is inflated or missing.

Why it's different

Most tools force you to pick one category. Real life is messier than that.

Budgeting apps and spreadsheets force a single category onto every transaction. That works when your finances are simple. When you run a business alongside a personal life — or take your team to dinner that was also a personal outing — forcing one category creates inaccurate books. The split tool handles the reality of mixed-purpose spending.

Balanced before it applies

The split tool requires all portions to add up to the original total. You cannot apply an unbalanced split — which means no partial splits, no rounding errors, and no amounts disappearing from your books because the math was slightly off.

Any number of portions

A single transaction can be split into two, three, or more portions if it served multiple distinct purposes. Portion 1 goes to business supplies. Portion 2 goes to personal groceries. Portion 3 goes to a gift category. All three land correctly.

Downstream reports inherit the split

Every report, dashboard view, and category summary automatically uses the split amounts — not the original single-category total. Your expense breakdowns, your net position calculations, and your accountant reports all reflect the correct split figures.

When you need it

The scenarios this tool is built for.

🛒

Mixed supply runs

You stopped at the store for both business supplies and personal groceries. The receipt is one charge. The split tool divides it correctly so your business expense total does not include personal items and your personal side does not miss them.

🍽️

Client meals with a personal component

A dinner that was partly a client meeting and partly personal. Split it between client entertainment (business) and meals (personal). Both sides get the accurate amount.

📱

Shared subscriptions

A software subscription you use for both your business and personal projects. Split it by the percentage of business use. Your business expense is accurate; you have a record of the personal component.

Common questions

Got questions?

A supply run that includes both business supplies and personal items, or a meal that was part client entertainment and part personal dining. Both happen frequently for founders and salon owners who run their finances through a mix of business and personal accounts.
The tool prevents it. The apply button stays disabled until all portions add up exactly to the original transaction total. You cannot submit an unbalanced split, so there is no risk of amounts disappearing from your books because of a calculation error.
Yes. There is no hard limit on the number of portions. A single transaction can be split into two, three, or more portions if it genuinely served multiple distinct purposes.
Yes. Go back to the categorize view, find the transaction, and open the split tool. It does not matter if the transaction was previously assigned a single category — you can split it at any time and both the previous categorization and the new split are handled correctly.
Yes. Every report, dashboard total, and category summary uses the split amounts, not the original unsplit total. Once a transaction is split, the split figures are what the entire system uses downstream.
