Upload Troubleshooting
Something looks off? This is the page for that. Not because you failed — but because Money Mastery is doing a lot for you, and one small wrong click can make the next screen look confusing.
Not after checking three other tabs. Not after trying to clean it up. Not after deleting rows to compensate. Immediately.
First Check: 5 Questions That Solve Most Problems
Before you go hunting for a complicated answer, check these five things. A surprising number of problems come from exactly one of them.
Nothing bad. This is the normal Google warning shown for private scripts built for Money Mastery users rather than released as a public app.
- Click Continue
- Choose the correct Google account
- Click Advanced
- Click the link that says Go to [tool name] (unsafe)
- Continue through the permissions flow
- If you see Select All, use it
- Do not click Back to safety
- Do not close the window halfway through
- Do not assume the warning means the system is unsafe
The permission flow did not finish, you are in the wrong Google account, or the auth session got interrupted.
- Refresh the sheet
- Click START HERE again
- Make sure you are signed into the same Google account tied to your purchase
- If a permissions screen appears, complete it fully
Google is not giving the sheet permission to identify the signed-in user, or you are in the wrong browser account.
- Confirm you are signed into Google in that browser
- Confirm it is the same Google account tied to your Money Mastery access
- Re-run the permissions flow if needed
- The key was typed incorrectly
- Extra spaces were copied with the key
- The wrong Google account is being used
- The key belongs to a different system
- The sheet has not fully synced registration state yet
- Copy the key again exactly as it appears — no extra spaces
- Confirm you are in the correct Google account
- Confirm you are in the correct Personal or Business file
The registration flow expects a 4–6 digit numeric PIN.
- Make sure the PIN is numbers only
- Make sure it is at least 4 digits
- Make sure both entries match exactly
You may be a guest, not the primary owner.
If you are not the account owner, ask the owner to add you as a guest from the Money Mastery menu rather than registering as the primary user.
Sometimes a VPN or browser interference blocks the menu display even though permission succeeded.
- Try turning the VPN off temporarily
- Refresh the sheet
- Use the hamburger menu (☰) if available while you sort it out
The Upload Center could not load the available account tabs for that file.
- Refresh the sheet and wait a moment, then retry
- Make sure the Upload Center file opened fully
- Confirm you are not in the wrong file entirely
Wrong file type, file too large, browser failed to read it, or a damaged bank export.
Use only supported file types: CSV, .xls / .xlsx, or PDF. If rejected, download a fresh export directly from your bank and try again.
- PDF — up to ~50 MB; processing warnings above the mid-40 MB range
- Excel — around 20 MB
- CSV — around 10 MB
- Download a smaller date range
- Split the file into smaller chunks if needed
- Use CSV instead of PDF when possible — it is always the cleaner path
- The PDF is password-protected
- The PDF is unusually large
- The layout is hard to extract cleanly
- The bank's PDF format is not import-friendly
- Download CSV or XLSX from your bank instead, if available
- Make sure the PDF is not password-protected
- Try a smaller statement date range
- If the PDF is huge, split it into smaller files
- The bank export included extra metadata rows
- Signs are reversed
- The wrong account type was chosen
- The file is using an unusual format
- Compare the review screen to the original statement
- If signs are reversed, check the Account Type setting
- For credit cards → use Flipped Account
- For checking/debit → use Traditional Account
- If the file came from Excel, try saving as CSV UTF-8 first
This is one of the most common upload issues. The source is almost always a credit card export, or the account was imported as Traditional when it needed Flipped Account.
- Traditional Account — income positive, expenses negative. Use for most checking / debit / bank accounts.
- Flipped Account — expenses positive, income negative in the source file. Use for many credit card exports.
If you are already on the review screen and everything is backward, use ± Reverse All Signs.
- The file did not contain the full date range
- The AI missed some lines
- Some transactions were filtered as summaries or duplicates
- The wrong account statement was used
At the review screen: compare against the original statement, use Add Line for missing transactions, and remove anything that does not belong. Do not click Add These Transactions until the review table looks right.
- The statement overlapped a period already imported
- The month was imported twice
- A duplicated row made it through the source file
Before approving: compare the review screen against your statement and remove obvious duplicates. After importing into the Upload Center: use the teal first row and gold last row markers to identify exactly what was just added, then copy only that block into your real system.
Treat the review screen as the final checkpoint. Nothing is committed until you approve it.
The system may still work, but extraction quality may suffer.
- Choose the correct File Type
- Choose the correct Bank if known
- Confirm the correct Account Type
- Retry with a fresh file if needed
Press Ctrl + Z / ⌘ + Z immediately.
- Copy only the teal-to-gold block from the Upload Center
- Move to the correct account tab
- Click the first empty cell in Column C
- Use Paste values only (Ctrl + Shift + V / ⌘ + Shift + V)
Undo immediately: Ctrl + Z / ⌘ + Z.
Undo immediately, then re-paste using Paste values only.
- Windows: Ctrl + Shift + V
- Mac: ⌘ + Shift + V
- A month that was already there was pasted again
- You copied more than the newest upload block
- The same block was pasted twice
Compare your latest pasted section to the rows already there. Use the Upload Center's teal first row / gold last row markers to identify only the newest batch before copying.
Use support or the official correction workflow rather than attempting your own repair.
- Is this telling a personal money story? → Personal Category
- Is this telling a business money story? → Business / Special Label
- Is this not a normal category at all? (transfer, credit card payment, refund) → Special Label
This is a normal human judgment call, not a system failure.
Correct the row directly in the categorization workflow. The system gets smarter from truth, not from keeping a bad decision consistent.
Return to categorization and finish labeling every row:
- Category
- Business / Special Label where applicable
- Need / Desire where applicable
- Memo only where useful
Use the proper special labels for: transfers, credit card payments, ignored rows, refunds / return workflows, and split transactions.
Use the official split workflow instead of typing the label manually.
- Was the data uploaded?
- Was it pasted into the correct account tab?
- Was it categorized?
- Are you looking at the correct filter period?
The Dashboard is reflecting incomplete or mis-labeled source data.
- Recent uploads complete?
- Data in the correct account tabs?
- Categories complete?
- Transfers / debt payments / ignored rows labeled correctly?
- Any duplicated months?
Debt payments and transfers are tracked separately from ordinary expenses, which changes what appears in standard expense views.
- The category really belongs in normal expenses
- It should be a special label instead
- It is being surfaced in Other Transactions / Payments views
- Was the data uploaded?
- Was it pasted into the correct account tab?
- Was it categorized?
That solves a huge percentage of "missing month" problems.
- All months uploaded?
- Pasted into correct account tabs?
- Categorized consistently?
- Special labels used correctly?
- Duplicates removed?
The Yearly Overview is only as accurate as the uploads and labels beneath it.
- Missing transactions
- Incorrect business categorization
- Ordinary categories used where special labels were needed
- Relying on adjustment areas instead of fixing source data
If the full system needs to reflect the correction, fix it in the actual account tab, not only in a P&L adjustment area.
If you need the full system to reflect the missing item, add or correct the transaction in the real account data. Do not rely only on the P&L adjustment area.
The Dashboard only shows active savings funds that have a real yearly goal and are not marked completed.
- Does the fund have a yearly goal?
- Is it marked completed by mistake?
- Does it have a priority number?
- Is there a current saved amount?
Update the priority number in the Savings sheet. Lower numbers rise higher on the Dashboard.
Mark the goal Completed in the Savings sheet. The Dashboard filters out completed goals so they stop appearing as active funds.
The Dashboard savings area has two different layers: your Savings sheet goals (what you planned) and your actual net savings / surplus data for the selected period (what your money flow made possible). The net savings line reflects actual financial activity, not just your planned number.
Press Ctrl + Z / ⌘ + Z and stop editing until you are sure it is reversed.
- Keep typing
- Delete surrounding rows
- Try to reconstruct formulas manually
- Undo immediately if possible
- If not, stop editing that section
- Take a screenshot
- Document what you changed
- Use support instead of guessing the formula
If the system has a designated naming cell, use that method instead. If the rename caused visible confusion, stop and document it for support.
Use support or the official correction workflow rather than continuing to improvise.
- If recent: Undo immediately (Ctrl + Z / ⌘ + Z)
- Re-paste using Paste values only (Ctrl + Shift + V / ⌘ + Shift + V)
When to Stop and Ask for Help
- You overwrote a formula and can't undo it safely
- You deleted rows and are not sure what shifted
- The wrong month was pasted and Undo is no longer clean
- Registration / access is failing after correct permissions
- The Dashboard or reports still look wrong after uploads, paste, and categorization are confirmed
- You are seeing account-disabled or access-restricted messages
- Something feels structurally broken, not just incomplete
- The name of the sheet / tab
- What you were trying to do
- What you clicked or pasted
- Whether it was CSV / Excel / PDF
- Whether it was Personal or Business
- The exact warning or error message
- A screenshot
- Whether you already tried Undo
So if something looks wrong:
- Pause
- Undo if it just happened
- Check the basic five questions
- Go back to the underlying data
- Use support before experimenting with structural repairs
That is how you keep a small problem small.
